What’s the biggest difference between our Organic Fertilizer program and other fertilizer program options?

NO PESTICIDES! Our goal is to build soil health, not destroy it with commonly used herbicides, fungicides, miticides, or biocides. Regardless of whether a pesticide is organic or not, it is still killing something, which always affects ecology negatively.

NO SYNTHETICS! Synthetic fertilizers, including those that are listed as “Natural-Organic” are harmful to your soil, pets, and children. More often than not, these synthetic materials leach into storm water management systems. This creates algae build up and blooms, kills off aquatic life, and requires a lot of coal derived energy to clean and use as drinking water. These non-organic fertilizers often will leave a sludge or oil film on your lawn during rainy weather.

OMRI Listed! Our fertilizer blends primarily contain feather meal, kelp meal, and blood meal. These ingredients are safe for you, children, and pets to walk on right after application. No more hiding inside while harmful pesticides are being applied! No more hours of waiting for residues to dry to utilize your own lawn. No more threats of cancer and asthma due to unsafe applications.

So what about lawn weeds?

Most “weeds” in lawns are beneficial plants! They’re also symptoms of what’s going on in the soil biology. For example, common clover is typically found in soils that are nitrogen deficient. This beneficial plant has nodes on its roots that release more nitrogen into the soil than it takes up, making it an excellent soil nitrogen fixer!

It was common before the early 1960’s for every blend of grass seed to have about 5% of clover seed in it as well. Clover is also a wonderful source of pollen for our all important bees. Another common weed is Wild Violet. Violet’s are a great ground cover that is native to our region! They are host plants for sweat bees (Halictidae), which are a specialist native pollinator to the Wild Violets.

When it comes to violets in lawns, we see them as wonderful additions to add beautiful color in spring and fall. One last example of a misunderstood lawn plant are Dandelions. Dandelions are clear indications of two major soil conditions; low calcium and soil compaction. They send out a thick tap root, which goes deep into the soil and alleviates soil compaction.

This allows deeper water penetration and better moisture retaining capacity.

How do we lower the number of “weeds” in your lawn?

By optimizing the soil nutrients, and using only the best lawn maintenance practices, we are able to create a beautiful thick lawn with a high turf canopy. This keeps your soil cool, hydrated, and helps prevent weed seeds from ever getting the required light to germinate. This typically takes 2-3 seasons of our Clean Air Core Aeration and Overseeding service.

How does it work?

When building soil health, everything starts with a soil test. We test every lawn to get accurate readings to find out what your lawn has, and what we need to focus on building. From there, we offer several options to best suit your needs.

Limestone – Most of our native soil is known to be acidic. With proper soil testing, applications are put down to help neutralize the ph. This creates much better growing conditions, as ph levels are a big factor in knowing how to treat your lawn for optimized results.

Iron – Iron is a wonderful mineral to help increase growth and density of grass, strengthen resistance to disease, and promote a deep green color. Lawns that are rich in iron are much more tolerant to heat stress, drought stress, and heavy traffic.

Biochar – Biochar is a charcoal product, created from wood or agricultural waste. This beneficial application improves soil structure, increases water and nutrient retention, and promotes increased soil microbial activity. Another wonderful benefit of Biochar is that it acts as a carbon sink, taking the carbon out of the air and putting it back into the soil. This helps to mitigate the effects of global climate change by sequestering carbon.

Humic Acid – Humic acid is a type of organic matter that improves soil structure, increases moisture retention and nutrient uptake, and promotes healthy soil root growth. This is applied around overseeding time to improve germination results.

Molasses – Molasses is a great source of carbon and energy for soil microorganisms, which leads to an increase in beneficial microbial activity in the soil. This will help to improve soil structure, nutrient cycling, and reduce risk of disease.
