Watering Instructions

Watering your plants is an essential part of keeping them healthy and thriving. However, it can be tricky to know how much and how often to water your plants, as different types of plants have different watering needs. Here are some general watering instructions to help you keep your plants hydrated and happy.

First and foremost, it's important to water your plants deeply and infrequently, rather than shallowly and frequently. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making the plants more drought-tolerant.

When watering, make sure the water is reaching the roots and not just the surface of the soil.  To check if the soil is dry, you can stick your finger in the soil or use a moisture meter.

It's also important to consider the time of day when watering your plants. The best time to water is in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler and there is less evaporation. In hot weather, it is essential to water your plants more frequently, but in cooler weather, you can water less.

The amount of water you give your plants should also be adjusted based on the stage of growth. Seedlings and young plants need less water than mature plants, so be mindful of this when watering.

Additionally, be mindful of over-watering, as it can lead to root rot and other problems.

USE THESE WATERING TIPS:
  • You’ll want to set up hoses, sprinklers, and timers to cover the turf areas.
  • Around the 2-3 week mark, you’ll begin to see some germination that looks like pine needles coming from the holes.
  • From here, you can shift your watering to 30 mins for each area, every other day, early in the morning (5-9 is best as the dew point is the highest). This phase should also go for about 2-3 weeks.
  • At this point, you should definitely have germination and can cut back the watering to once a week for 1 hour each time per area. This will encourage the roots to grow deeper, as the water will soak deeper into the ground. Deep, infrequent watering is always best once established.
  • During the germination process it’s key to always keep your mowing height as high as possible, 3.5”+! You’ll want the turf to grow tall, as it is typical to have upper growth (the turf) to match the lower growth (the roots). Deep root establishment and high mowing are the best way to build a thick lawn to mitigate weeds.
