Project Blog: Native Space Restoration

Project Blog: Native Space Restoration March 9th, 2023 We’ve converted 500sq ft+ of turf grass converted into native space! This was a beautiful project of connecting two existing gardens in the front yard, and creating a native privacy screen in the backyard! The plants were chosen with privacy and ecological value in mind. In the front yard, we’ve planted 3 Myrica pensylvanica (Bayberry) and 1 Prunus serotina (Black Cherry). The Black Cherry is a host plant to over 450 species of butterflies and moths including Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Promethea Moth, and the Wild Cherry Sphinx Moth. The species Prunus, Cherry, holds the second highest ecological value native to our region. This has been planted as a succession plant to the number one plant in ecological value, oaks. Bayberries are semi evergreen shrubs that have a sweet scent to them. The white berries are favorites of Chickadees, Catbirds, Bluebirds, and many more! The native privacy screen has been planted with 1 Magnolia virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia), 3 Ilex Glabra (Inkberry), 2 Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Spicebush), 1 Cornus racemosa (Grey Dogwood), and 3 Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry). The Sweetbay Magnolia is a host plant to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Palamedes Swallowtail, and Sweetbay Silkmoth amongst many other species. Inkberries make great privacy plants and are a host plant for the Henry’s elfin butterfly. The Carolina Spicebush is a great shrub for nesting birds and hosts the Spicebush Swallowtail. Grey Dogwoods provide great value to waterfowl, marshbirds, and shorebirds, as well as host the Spring Azure butterfly. Black Chokeberries pollen supports the native mason bee, Coral Hairstreak butterfly, and Large Lace-border Moth. Both the front and backyard will have Rhododendron maximum added to them as well. 2 in front to replace a 30+ year old Rhody that died and 1 to round out the privacy line. Rhododendrons have a special value to our native bumblebees. As you can see from the final pictures of the native privacy screen, the garden bed has been freshly mulched using double ground material hardwood mulch, then topped with a layer of leaves! This is one of our sustainable practices that we implement called, Biomimicry. The Benefits of Native Landscape Gardening

Native landscape gardening is becoming increasingly popular as people realize the benefits of creating beautiful outdoor spaces that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. The concept of native landscape gardening involves using plants and materials that are indigenous to the region, rather than imported or exotic plants that may not be well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions. The benefits of native landscape gardening are numerous and far-reaching, both for the environment and for homeowners who want to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space. In this article, we will explore some of the most significant benefits of native landscape gardening and why it is an excellent choice for any homeowner looking to create a stunning outdoor space. The Benefits of Native Landscape Gardening Environmental benefits One of the most significant benefits of native landscape gardening is its positive impact on the environment. When you use native plants in your garden, you are creating a natural habitat for local wildlife, including birds, insects, and other beneficial creatures. Native plants are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions, which means they require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides than exotic plants. This, in turn, reduces the amount of pollution and chemical runoff that can harm local ecosystems. Additionally, native plants have deep root systems that help prevent erosion and improve soil health. They also require less maintenance than exotic plants, which means you will spend less time and money on watering, pruning, and fertilizing your garden. Improved air quality Another significant benefit of native landscape gardening is the positive impact it has on air quality. Native plants are excellent at absorbing pollutants and carbon dioxide from the air, which helps to reduce the amount of harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is particularly important in urban areas where air pollution can have a significant impact on public health. By creating a garden filled with native plants, you are doing your part to improve air quality and create a healthier environment for yourself and your community. Increased biodiversity Native plants are an essential part of local ecosystems, providing food and shelter for a wide variety of insects, birds, and other animals. By creating a garden filled with native plants, you are helping to increase biodiversity in your local area, which is critical for maintaining a healthy and thriving ecosystem. Biodiversity is essential for many reasons, including the pollination of plants, the control of pests and diseases, and the maintenance of healthy soil. By creating a garden filled with native plants, you are helping to support the local ecosystem and protect it for future generations. Lower water bills Native plants are well-suited to local climate and soil conditions, which means they require less water than exotic plants. This is particularly important in areas where water is scarce or expensive. By creating a garden filled with native plants, you can significantly reduce your water bills and conserve this precious resource. Additionally, native plants are typically more drought-tolerant than exotic plants, which means they can survive long periods of dry weather without additional watering. This is not only beneficial for your wallet but also […]

Maintaining An Eco-Friendly Lawn

Maintaining an eco-friendly lawn is not only good for the environment, but it also has numerous benefits for your home and family. An eco-friendly lawn can help improve the air and water quality, provide a habitat for local wildlife, and reduce the amount of waste generated by your household. TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR ECO-FRIENDLY LAWN Water Wisely One of the most important things you can do to maintain an eco-friendly lawn is to water wisely. Over-watering can lead to wasted water and nutrients, as well as encourage the growth of weeds and diseases. To water your lawn wisely, try to water deeply and infrequently, rather than shallowly and frequently. This will encourage deeper root growth and help your lawn better withstand droughts. You can also consider using a rain barrel to collect rainwater and use it to water your lawn. This will not only help you save water but will also provide your lawn with natural nutrients. Use Organic Fertilizers Another way to maintain an eco-friendly lawn is to use organic fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers can be harmful to the environment and can also be harmful to pets and children who may come into contact with them. Organic fertilizers, on the other hand, are made from natural materials and are much safer for the environment and your family. Organic fertilizers also tend to release nutrients more slowly, which can help prevent fertilizer burn and reduce the need for frequent applications. Practice Natural Pest Control Pest control is an important part of maintaining a healthy lawn, but it is important to do it in an eco-friendly way. Many traditional pest control methods involve the use of chemicals that can harm the environment and can also be harmful to pets and children. Instead, consider using natural pest control methods, such as planting pest-resistant plants or using natural insecticides. You can also encourage the presence of natural predators, such as ladybugs and praying mantises, which can help control pest populations. Mow High When it comes to mowing your lawn, one of the most important things you can do is to mow high. This means leaving your grass a bit longer than you might normally, which can help encourage deeper root growth and reduce the need for frequent watering. Mowing high can also help your lawn better withstand droughts and other stresses, which can help keep it healthy and green throughout the growing season.  Learn more about our mowing services here. Choose Native Plants Choosing native plants for your lawn and garden can help support local ecosystems and reduce the need for excessive watering and fertilization. Native plants are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, which means they are often easier to maintain and require less water and fertilizer than non-native species. Native plants also provide important habitat for local wildlife, such as birds and butterflies, which can help support biodiversity in your area.  See more information here regarding native plant installations. Compost Yard Waste Composting your yard waste is an excellent way to reduce the amount of waste generated by your household and to provide your lawn and garden with natural nutrients. […]
